It's been exactly two weeks now since I've been writing about HOPE as we observe the second Sunday during this Advent period. In all this time, I've somehow failed in my duty to delve into the definition and meaning of hope.. so here we go into understanding a bit more about the importance of hope in our lives and why I chose this little 4-letter word to be this year's theme.
Hope is a bit more complex in definition and meaning - as a noun, the basic version of the word means to have trust. It is a "desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in fulfilment or success" according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. It can also be defined as something desired or hoped for, a wish if you may. Hope then becomes a "doing" word, a verb if you like which is defined as "to want something to happen or be true" or desire with expectation of obtainment of fulfilment.
Whether we realise it or not, hope is part of everyone's life. Think about your daily life and how many times you may use the word - from an email "hoping that this finds you well" to daily greetings where one may pass a comment of "hope that you and your loved ones are well" to possibly wishing someone well or to get better "hope you get/feel better soon"... Everyone hopes for something - it's an inherent part of being a human.
Hope is not to be mixed up with optimism. Even the most pessimistic person in the world can still hope for something - from getting that job or that raise or promotion or even just buying that new pair of shoes you've been eyeing. Hope generally is specific to one thing, but of course one can have many hopes in their life. In all this, I have not even touched on the religious or spiritual side of hope and how having hope coupled with faith in the higher power can transform one's life to new levels.
Hope is the thing that helped me get through some of the toughest times in my life - from overcoming depression to moments of just not knowing where or what or how I was going to get through the day when I was really at my lowest in certain periods in my life. Hope coupled with faith was the thing that got me through my dad's illness and health challenges, through my mom's current situation and so many other things in my life..
Having hope, giving hope, being hope or just hoping for something makes life that much more better in some way. It means that we maybe have something in our lives that we want to improve, or dream of having our deepest desires fulfilled - either way, no matter how big or small, having hope is the first step of creating this reality. Hope is that little glimmer of light that motivates and encourages us to hold out to overcome no matter what our circumstances... So this week, look out for posts that cover exactly these themes. And for today, take some time to reflect on what HOPE is to YOU!
Till tomorrow then,
Much love always, Poonam
